The Department of Materials Science provides education levels of bachelors, masters and postgraduates (PhD, D.Sci.) in technical sciences and technology on “Materials Science and Technology of Materials” particularly specializing in the field of materials for nano- biophotonics and polymer electronics – innovative areas closely relating to information technologies and supported by federal programs on the development of nanotechnologies and resource efficiency

The Department provides students with fundamental knowledge and practical experience in the synthesis, quality control and application of materials for light engineering, electronic devices, displays, nano- and biophotonics featuring with the currently extending application and enhancement due to the development of novel devices (white LEDs, OLED displays etc.).    
The educational staff includes 10 professors and associate professors. The Department performs research activities in the field of lighting materials and technologies, cooperates with the leading R&D/educational centers and enterprises including the Institute of Silicate Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute of High Molecular Compounds of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute, Konstantinov Institute of Nuclear Physics, Radio-device plant Showa Denko K.K. (Japan), Shizuoka University (Japan), McMaster University (Canada), Eastern Illinois University (USA), Ecole Des Mines (France).

 

 

 

 

R&D results obtained by the Department are protected with a series of patents, supported by different grants, published in a number of books, research articles, presented at numerous international conferences. The Department performs research works for various Russian and foreign companies and enterprises according to the concluded contracts. The Department is an organizer of a series of conferences and seminars: International Conference on Display Technologies, International Seminar on Advanced Materials for the Electronics, monthly seminar “Optics and Displays” at the St-Petersburg Scientific Society. 

The Department head Dr. Maxim M. Sychov is the chairman of the Russian Chapter of the Society for Information Display (SID), in 2011 awarded with a Certificate of Commendation for the active participation in the Society activities and obtained the Senior status. The Russian Department of SID is acknowledged as the best in Europe in 2011.

The students are involved in the Department’s research activities since the first years of study, including experimental work, participation in the international conferences and training courses abroad (USA, France, Japan).

The graduates can receive the diploma of the St-Petersburg Institute of Technology simultaneously with a diploma from a foreign University.
